Florida Gators opened their season with a commanding 66-21 victory over the FAU Owls on Saturday night, delivering the program’s most prolific opener in more than three decades.
The 66 points scored marked the highest total in a season opener since 1988, underscoring a night of offensive fireworks.
The Gators’ offense surged to 624 total yards, the greatest output of any team since the 2020 season, as the unit exploited every opportunity to move the ball downfield under new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.
Sophomore Jadan Baugh contributed 160 yards, while senior Aaron Philo operated with confidence, making key decisions and even securing an interception that was not his fault, illustrating the depth of talent across the roster.
Head coach Jon Sumrall lauded the collective effort, describing the performance as ‘explosive’ and highlighting the noticeable development of his players, a testament to the collaborative work of the coaching staff.
Sumrall also pointed out that despite the offensive triumph, the defense still has room to grow, a focus that will shape the early weeks of the season, but the victory nevertheless represented a dream start for the first-year coach.
