Matthew Tkachuk, the Florida Panthers’ forward and a prominent NHL star, recently hosted a youth hockey tournament at the Baptist IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as part of a broader effort to nurture the sport’s growth in South Florida.
The event, organized in partnership with Baptist Health, brought together top young athletes from across the region, allowing families to test slap shots and receive direct instruction from Tkachuk, who emphasized competition, teamwork, and enjoyment as the core of the game.
A Personal Connection to the Game
Reflecting on his own upbringing in St. Louis, Tkachuk recalled the excitement of his childhood tournaments and the special feeling of the start‑of‑season weekend, moments that he says helped shape his passion for hockey.
He also reiterated that hockey is the best sport in the world, a conviction that underpins his role with the Panthers, while sharing his father’s timeless advice—compete fiercely, be a good teammate, and enjoy the game—and expressing his longing to return to the NHL after a summer break.
