The Florida Panthers have officially signed Czech defenseman Mikulas Hovorka to a one-year, two-way contract, adding depth to a blue line that is looking to solidify its defensive core heading into the latter half of the season.
A New Chapter for the Young Defenseman
Hovorka arrives after two seasons with the Charlotte Checkers, where he recorded 28 points in 117 regular-season appearances and contributed five assists in 23 playoff games. The 25-year-old native of Prague has been praised for his size, skating ability and offensive instincts, traits that have translated well from the AHL to the professional ranks.
The player made his NHL debut on February 5, 2026, against the Tampa Bay Lightning and later logged his first NHL point on April 15, 2026, when he assisted on a goal in a matchup with the Detroit Red Wings.
General manager Bill Zito highlighted the signing, stating that Hovorka’s blend of defensive reliability and offensive upside fits the Panthers’ vision of a balanced, competitive roster.
Head coach Paul Maurice added that the young Czech’s work ethic and versatility will allow him to contribute on both the penalty kill and even‑strength situations, providing the team with flexible options as the schedule intensifies.
With the contract in place, the Panthers aim to bolster their defensive depth and maintain momentum as they push toward the playoffs, hoping the addition of Hovorka will help anchor a blue line that has shown steady improvement throughout the season.
