Florida Panthers Secure Emil Pieniniemi in Deal with Pittsburgh Penguins

The 21‑year‑old Finnish defenseman joins the Panthers after a promising stint with the Wilkes‑Barre/Scranton Penguins and a silver‑medal run with Finland’s U‑20 squad.

A Strategic Acquisition

The Florida Panthers announced a trade that brings 21‑year‑old defenseman Emil Pieniniemi from the Pittsburgh Penguins, swapping the rights to forward Oliver Okuliar in the process.

Pieniniemi, a native of Kuopio, Finland, entered the NHL draft in 2023 and was selected by Pittsburgh in the third round, 91st overall.

After signing his entry‑level contract, he spent the 2025‑26 season with the Wilkes‑Barre/Scranton Penguins, appearing in nine AHL games and registering three points, including a goal and two assists.

He added two postseason appearances, contributing an assist, and logged 11 points with the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers, leading all defensemen with six goals and seven assists over 15 playoff contests.

Prior to North America, Pieniniemi compiled 39 games for Karpat in Finland’s Liiga, helping the club secure a bronze medal in his second season and earning a silver medal with Finland at the 2025 IIHF U‑20 World Championship.

His international résumé also includes stints at the 2023 IIHF U‑18 World Championship and the 2024 U‑20 tournament, underscoring his rapid development on the world stage.

The move reflects the Panthers’ intent to bolster their defensive depth, with General Manager Bill Zito emphasizing the player’s blend of size, skill, and proven playoff experience.
