A Fresh Start in Gainesville
The Florida soccer program opened its preseason under first‑year head coach Nick Zimmerman, a staff that arrived with a clear mission: forge a cohesive unit built on trust and consistent effort.
Zimmerman began the first practice by gathering the squad and shaking each player’s hand, a simple gesture that underscored his emphasis on personal connection and mutual respect.
Alongside Zimmerman, associate head coach Jonathan Garber, who previously worked with him at Mississippi State, brings a familiar voice to the locker room, and seven former Bulldogs have followed their mentor to Gainesville.
Midfielder Iori Watanabe, who recently relocated from Osaka, Japan, was recognized for embodying the competitive mindset the staff seeks, a testament to the global reach of the roster.
The team will test its chemistry in exhibition matches against the University of Miami and Florida International University in August, before opening the regular season against UCF on August 13.
Training sessions have featured individual drills and small‑sided scrimmages, allowing new faces to gel while veterans reinforce the standards set by the coaching staff.
