Florida State’s men’s basketball team opened its summer workout on June 22, marking the first public glimpse of a roster that looks larger and deeper than a year ago.
Second‑year coach Luke Loucks oversaw the session, using the moment to stress the progress his squad has made since his debut season and to reinforce the culture he is building.
The Seminoles have added five transfers and a top‑20 recruiting class, bringing 13 newcomers into the fold and reshaping the team’s identity.
Loucks said the staff is still looking to add one more big man, with conversations ongoing with agents in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Pro‑Style Identity Takes Shape
The coaching staff is emphasizing size, athleticism and a pro‑style of play, a shift from the more perimeter‑oriented approach of recent years.
Among the newcomers, Kameron Taylor and Shon Abaev stood out for their physical presence and ability to knock down three‑point shots, while Anthony Robinson II displayed his two‑way versatility.
Freshman center Brandon Bass Jr., a top‑100 recruit and four‑star prospect, impressed with his range and finishing ability inside the paint.
The excitement is tempered by injury concerns; Marcis Ponder, a 7‑foot‑tall prospect nicknamed “Baby Shaq,” will miss part of the preseason with a lingering shoulder issue, and Sebastian Rancik is sidelined by knee tendinitis.
AJ Swinton remains out as he continues recovery from an ACL tear suffered late last season.
Looking Ahead
Last year the team finished 18‑15 and nearly upset Duke in the ACC Tournament, a result that has fueled optimism that the new culture under Loucks can translate into more wins when the 2026‑27 season begins.
