Florida State University will honor former kicker Sebastian Janikowski by retiring his jersey number 38 during the opening game of the season against New Mexico State on August 29.
A Career Defined by Excellence
Janikowski arrived in Tallahassee in 1997 and quickly became a cornerstone of the Seminoles’ special teams, helping the 1999 squad finish 12‑0 and capture the national title.
Over his three seasons he converted 66 of 83 field‑goal attempts and added 126 extra points, establishing program records for accuracy and scoring that still stand.
NFL Journey and Lasting Impact
After leaving college, Janikowski spent 17 years in the NFL, primarily with the Oakland Raiders, where he amassed 1,913 points and set the franchise’s all‑time field‑goal record with 414 makes.
His professional career concluded with a brief stint with the Seattle Seahawks before his retirement in 2018, leaving behind a bridge between college and pro football.
Hall of Fame Recognition
In 2013 Janikowski was inducted into the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame, joining an elite group of Seminoles whose numbers have been retired, a list that includes Deion Sanders and Jameis Winston.
The upcoming ceremony will feature former teammates, coaches and fans, underscoring the lasting bond between Janikowski and the university community.
