A Rare Early‑Season Matchup
The Florida State Seminoles men's basketball team is set to open its 2026‑27 campaign on the road, traveling to Knoxville to meet the Tennessee Volunteers on Tuesday, December 1. The game is part of the annual ACC/SEC Challenge, a showcase that pits the conferences' top squads against one another in the first month of the season.
This will be only the second meeting between the two programs since 1990, and the first since a 60‑57 victory for the Seminoles in November 2019 at the Emerald Coast Challenge in Niceville, Florida. Historically, Florida State holds a 4‑5 record in nine all‑time meetings with Tennessee, a series that stretches back to 1957.
Both teams arrive with contrasting recent trajectories. Tennessee finished the 2023‑24 season at 25‑12, reached the Elite Eight, and fell to eventual national champion Michigan. In contrast, Florida State, under new head coach Luke Loucks, posted an 18‑15 record and missed postseason play. Volunteers coach Rick Barnes, a veteran of the SEC, will look to build on last year's deep run, while Loucks seeks to imprint his system on a roster that includes several newcomers.
The Seminoles' schedule features a blend of in‑state rivalries and marquee road trips. In addition to the Tennessee showdown, Florida State will host Georgia in the ACC/SEC Challenge and will travel to Cal, Stanford, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia, and Boston College within conference play. Non‑conference opponents include Florida A&M, Houston, Florida, Texas A&M, and Dayton, promising a demanding early slate.
The game will be televised on CBS Sports, which holds the rights to the ACC/SEC Challenge. Analyst Jon Rothstein has already highlighted the matchup as a must‑watch early‑season test, noting the contrast in momentum between the two programs.
