Florida State’s once‑promising recruiting pipeline has faltered in recent weeks, dropping the program out of the top‑50 rankings for the 2027 class.
Four‑star defensive end Desmond Malpress and four‑star offensive lineman JJ Brown announced their commitments to Clemson, choosing the Tigers over South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Auburn and Florida.
Their decisions are part of a larger exodus, with eight prospects opting for Clemson over the Seminoles in just three weeks, a shift that has reshaped the early landscape of the class.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Malpress is rated the No. 147 overall prospect, the No. 16 EDGE, and the top Florida recruit at his position, while Brown sits at No. 328 overall, No. 32 among offensive tackles, and No. 35 in Georgia.
A cascade of losses
The ripple effect extends beyond the two headline signees; other targets such as Santana Harvey, Elijah Morrison, Jamarin Simmons, Gary Walker, Carter Jones, Carter Blackwell, Logan Flaherty, Connor Winn, Anthony Cavallaro, Eric Vaulx Jr., Gregory Batson, Jemari Foreman and DaYon Cooper have also felt the pressure as the Seminoles scramble to retain momentum.
What’s next for Florida State
Coach Mike Norvell’s staff now faces a critical stretch, with official visits to Tallahassee’s campus postponed and the program forced to pivot toward alternative targets in the Southeast.
Despite the setbacks, the Seminoles still hold seven verbal commitments, a modest haul that places them at No. 51 nationally, but the road to climbing back into the top tier will require a rapid turnaround.
