UMBC’s men’s soccer squad opened its season with a hard‑fought 3‑2 win over Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday night, a result that introduced a fresh face to the spotlight.
At the 56th minute, a corner kick from senior midfielder Alberto Galicia found a loose defender, and the ball fell to Holdem, who slotted it home to put the Retrievers ahead.
A Promising Start
Holdem, a New Zealand native, finished the match with three attempts on goal, showcasing both composure and attacking intent on his collegiate debut.
The Retrievers will look to carry that momentum into Friday’s home fixture against Presbyterian at Retriever Soccer Park, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
Coach comments highlighted the team’s resilience, noting that the win reflects the depth and tactical discipline cultivated during preseason preparations.
