Follansbee Council Secures Former Football Field for $125,000

The purchase will delineate park limits and open possibilities for expanded recreation.

Clarifying Property Lines

The Follansbee City Council approved the purchase of a former football field for $125,000, a parcel that once served Follansbee Middle School and local youth leagues. The land, now part of a larger complex that includes the Blue Wave Center, will help the municipality refine its property boundaries with the adjacent Follansbee Park.

Mayor Scott McMahon explained that the acquisition will allow the city to "true up its property lines," a move championed by Councilman John Schwertfeger, who believes the step will enhance the park’s usability. Ward 5 councilman Joe Kafton inquired about potential financial arrangements, while Ward 2 councilman John Casinelli described the site as extending from the high wall to the park and from Mark Avenue to the public parking lot.

The property’s southern portion already hosts pickleball courts, and its northern edge provides parking for the New Day Christian Center. Councilman Anthony D’Ulisse raised questions about the exact limits of the parcel, prompting discussions about a possible lease‑to‑purchase agreement that could ease the financial burden.

In personnel matters, the council appointed Wendy DeAngelis as interim city clerk through June 30, 2027, a role that will appear on the 2027 municipal ballot. Additionally, the body voted to advertise a police officer position at a rate of $24 per hour, reinforcing its commitment to public safety.
