Foothill League Gears Up for 2026
The Foothill League entered the offseason with a buzz of anticipation, riding the momentum of Valencia High School’s third straight championship in 2025. The Vikings finished the year 9‑1 overall and 6‑0 in league play, but the title came with the departure of key seniors Brian Bonner and Brady Bretthauer, both now playing at the collegiate level.
At the heart of Valencia’s offense, sophomore quarterback Evan McCalister stepped up, throwing for 306 yards and four touchdowns in a dramatic 47‑44 victory over Paraclete. His emergence signals a new era, while Nico Funez, who honed his skills as a slot receiver and backup, is slated to become the primary running back.
Hart High School, meanwhile, will rely on Matix Frithsmith, who last season amassed 27 touchdowns and over 2,300 yards, to anchor an explosive attack. The team’s new starting quarterback, junior Camren Ketner, replaces Jacob Paisano, who moved on to the University of Northern Colorado, and is expected to adapt quickly to the role.
Saugus High School’s record‑setting receiver Landon Lattimore finished the year with 83 catches for 1,171 yards and 17 touchdowns, helping the Centurions improve to an 8‑2 overall record. With quarterback Jake Nuttall’s departure, the team is evaluating junior Brayden Connelly and freshman Zach Barnes for the starting position.
Golden Valley, Canyon, West Ranch and Castaic are each focused on rebuilding specific units. Golden Valley’s linebacker DJ Terry will lead efforts to shore up the offensive and defensive lines after a 4‑6 season, while Canyon and West Ranch hope to rebound from challenging years, bolstered by returns such as Charlie Samuelson’s 23‑catch, 503‑yard performance.
Coach Sirr Guy Shakir of Castaic, despite a single win in 2025, remains confident that the team’s work ethic and competitive spirit will translate into a stronger 2026 campaign. Across the league, the culture of teamwork and resilience is being cited as the foundation for future success.
