The event was coordinated by Portland Hearts of Pine in partnership with Soccer Maine, bringing together volunteers such as Samer Khudairi and players from the local club, including midfielder Ollie Wright, who traveled from London to join the festivities.
Participants like Kirsten, a 45‑year‑old community member, jumped into matches and offered informal coaching, while Ollie Wright described the scene as reminiscent of the tournaments he watched as a child, underscoring the event’s nostalgic appeal.
The festival also featured viewing parties for the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, allowing fans to cheer together and celebrate the sport’s global reach.
Beyond the matches, the day included giant inflatable darts, a dunk tank and a lineup of local food vendors, creating a carnival atmosphere that attracted players of all ages and highlighted the region’s thriving soccer community.
