Assault in Šiauliai
The incident unfolded in the city of Šiauliai when a former basketball player, identified as Dainius Songaila, encountered an aggressive dog while walking. He attempted to push the animal away with his foot, but the dog's owner reacted violently.
According to police reports, the owner struck Songaila with a heavy leash chain, delivering blows to his face that resulted in nasal injuries, a head wound and a chipped tooth. The assailant then fled the scene before any witnesses could intervene.
Songaila immediately contacted the authorities, prompting Šiauliai police to launch a pre‑trial investigation. Officers have secured the area and are gathering forensic evidence from the location where the attack occurred.
The suspect remains at large, and law enforcement agencies have initiated a city‑wide search to locate and apprehend him. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together a full account of the assault.
While the case is still under investigation, the incident has sparked discussions about public safety and the responsibilities of pet owners in urban environments. Authorities have reminded citizens to report aggressive animals promptly and to avoid confronting them without proper assistance.
