The Milwaukee Bucks announced this week that two former University of Virginia basketball alumni have taken on new responsibilities within the organization’s coaching structure. The moves, confirmed by team president Taylor Jenkins, signal a continued emphasis on player development and scouting acumen.
Isaiah Wilkins, a 2018 graduate of the Cavaliers, returns to the professional ranks after a brief stint as an assistant coach at Cal during the 2025‑2026 season. Wilkins previously served under Tony Bennett and interim coach Ron Sanchez, where he helped shape the defensive schemes that defined Virginia’s recent success.
Johnny Carpenter, who managed Tony Bennett’s staff from 2010 to 2013, brings a blend of video analysis and on‑court coaching experience. After roles at UVA, Memphis, and Indiana, Carpenter joined the Bucks after a stint as assistant video coordinator for Rick Carlisle with the Dallas Mavericks.

Head coach Taylor Jenkins, who previously worked with both Wilkins and Carpenter at Memphis, highlighted the value of their diverse backgrounds. ‘Their understanding of player development and analytical tools aligns perfectly with our goal of building a versatile roster,’ Jenkins said in a statement.
The hires also reflect a broader trend across the NBA, where teams are integrating former collegiate coaches into player development pathways.
