Jonathan Mitchell, a former national champion and all‑conference player, has been announced as the newest assistant coach on the Appalachian State University men’s basketball staff, effective June 2026. The university highlighted his extensive playing background and his reputation as a skilled developer of talent.
A distinguished playing and coaching pedigree
Mitchell capped his collegiate career as a starter on Florida’s 2007 NCAA Championship team before transferring to Rutgers, where he earned All‑Big East honors as a senior. His professional playing years spanned seven seasons across Spain, Israel, France, Greece, Hungary, and Iceland, giving him a global perspective on the game.
High school accolades followed earlier in his career: he was named New York State Gatorade Player of the Year in 2006 while leading Mount Vernon High School to two state titles and setting the program’s all‑time scoring record.
Collegiate coaching highlights
After beginning his coaching journey as an assistant to Tom Crean at Georgia, where he worked with Brooklyn Nets center Nic Claxton, Mitchell served as an assistant at Stetson. Over four seasons with the Hatters he coached three all‑conference players and two ASUN Freshman of the Year recipients.
His next stop was Mercer, where in his second season the Bears posted 19 wins and their best winning percentage since 2013‑14. Under his guidance, players Baraka Okojie and Armanti Mighty earned all‑conference recognition, with Okojie scoring in double figures in all 31 games and the team ranking 15th nationally in fast‑break points.
Professional and developmental experiences
Mitchell spent a season with the Birmingham Squadron, the G League affiliate of the New Orleans Pelicans, before moving to the New York Knicks as a development coach, helping Trey Jameson III secure a two‑way contract. He was also selected for the TopConnect Basketball Symposium in 2025 and 2026, an elite forum that connects the nation’s top assistants with leading minds in the sport.
In the summer of 2026 he will attend the inaugural NABC Flight School, a program designed to cultivate the next generation of basketball leaders through intensive education, mock interviews, and targeted networking.
Path to Appalachian State
Appalachian State’s athletic director cited Mitchell’s blend of championship experience, player development success, and extensive networking as key reasons for the hire. The university hopes his background will translate into immediate competitive advantage for the Mountaineers.
Beyond the court, Mitchell graduated from Rutgers in 2011 with a degree in communications, a foundation that supports his approach to leadership and media engagement.
