Former College Stars Lead Inaugural Basketball Camp at Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival

Trent Noah, Maddox Huff, and Sawyer Thompson mentor local youth as the festival’s celebration continues through May 24

A Community‑Driven Celebration

The Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival kicked off its inaugural basketball camp this week, bringing together former college standouts and local youth on a sun‑splashed field in Pineville. The camp, held on Monday and Tuesday, marked the festival’s first foray into sports instruction.

Former Harlan County Black Bears star Trent Noah, along with alumni Maddox Huff and Sawyer Thompson, returned to their roots to run drills, share stories and spark excitement among the campers. Noah expressed his enthusiasm for creating a space that reconnects him with his hometown, while Thompson highlighted the joy of giving back to the community that shaped him.

Thompson, a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, emphasized the importance of mentorship, noting that the next generation of players deserves the same opportunities he once received. Huff added that the bond he shares with Noah, forged through years of growing up together, made the experience especially meaningful.

At the close of each session, every child received a t‑shirt signed by Huff, Noah and Thompson, a small token that captured the spirit of camaraderie and shared achievement.

Dr. Nick Fugate, chairman of the Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival, praised the trio for their character and trustworthiness, stating that their presence underscores the festival’s commitment to community service and youth development.

Beyond the court, the festival’s schedule includes a carnival, concert, parade, arts and crafts booths and food vendors, ensuring that the celebration extends through May 24 and offers diverse activities for families across the region.
