Community Outreach Brings Joy to Wichita Youth
Taje McCoy, a standout defensive player who recently transferred to Georgia Tech after stints at Oklahoma State and Colorado, arrived in Wichita with a mission that extended beyond the gridiron. The 2024 Big 12 defensive newcomer of the year honoree grew up within the walls of Upper Room Apostolic Church, a place that shaped his early years and instilled a deep sense of community service.
On a Saturday morning, McCoy teamed up with the church to distribute 50 backpacks and matching shirts to children preparing for the new school year. The giveaway was more than a simple donation; it was part of a larger back‑to‑school celebration that featured horseback riding courtesy of McCoy’s brother and bright, inflatable slides that turned the parking lot into a playground of excitement.
The event unfolded quickly, with the backpacks and shirts handed out in a matter of minutes, but the impact lingered. Children laughed as they chased each other on the slides, while the scent of fresh saddles lingered from the horseback rides. For many, the day combined the thrill of play with the reassurance of a supportive network that recognized their needs.
McCoy expressed a clear intention to transform this initiative into an annual tradition, citing the overwhelming positive response as proof of its value. By weaving his personal story of faith and perseverance with tangible assistance, he hopes to inspire other athletes and community leaders to look beyond their fields of competition and invest in the next generation.
