A handful of alumni from Colorado Mesa University have turned their college success into professional opportunities, catching the attention of baseball fans across the country.
Kyle Leahy’s Rise in St. Louis
Leahy, a right‑handed pitcher, has secured a spot in the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting rotation. In 14 starts this season he owns a 4.63 earned run average, 59 strikeouts and a WHIP that reflects his growing command.
His college career was equally impressive; across 30 starts he posted a 25‑2 record, a 3.13 ERA and 187 strikeouts, establishing himself as one of the most reliable arms in the RMAC.
Andrew Morris Makes His Mark with Minnesota
Another former Maverick, Andrew Morris, broke into the majors with the Minnesota Twins this year. The left‑hander holds a 2‑2 record, a 4.68 ERA and 36 strikeouts in nearly 33 innings, numbers that hint at a promising future.
During his senior season at Colorado Mesa he went 18‑2 with a 3.23 ERA, throwing 175.1 innings and fanning 215 batters, a performance that helped the team capture the RMAC regular‑season title.
A Broader Alumni Impact
The ripple effect of the program extends beyond the two headline acts. Bligh Madris, who previously appeared in the big leagues, now patrols the Triple‑A Memphis roster, batting .275 with eight homers, 41 RBIs and a .875 OPS.
Caleb Farmer, the 2022 RMAC Player of the Year, is thriving in the Washington Nationals’ Double‑A affiliate in Harrisburg, where he is hitting .293 with three home runs and nine RBIs.
Andrew Pogue has found a home with the Detroit Tigers’ Single‑A affiliate in Lakeland, posting 19 strikeouts over more than 25 innings, while Spencer Bramwell, a former catcher, has managed a single RBI in the Double‑A Southern League despite injury setbacks.
Hayden McGeary, a two‑time National Division II Player of the Year, was released by the Chicago Cubs and remains unsigned, leaving his next chapter open.
The collective trajectory of these former Mavericks underscores the quality of coaching and competition at Colorado Mesa, a university that continues to produce talent capable of competing at the highest levels of professional baseball.
