A hometown mentor takes the mound
Justin Berg, a former Chicago Cubs right‑hander who spent two seasons in the big leagues from 2009 to 2011, has returned to the Upper Peninsula to nurture the next generation of pitchers. Now serving as the Director of Sports and Baseball coordinator at the 906 Sports Academy in Kingsford, Michigan, Berg blends his major‑league experience with a passion for community development.
Growing up in Antigo, Wisconsin, Berg chose the number 64 on his jersey as a nod to the highways that criss‑cross the region, a subtle tribute that now resonates with the youngsters he coaches. His playing days with the Cubs gave him a foundation that he hopes to pass on through a new 12U travel team.
Teaching the game, not just the score
The academy’s 12U squad focuses on skill development and enjoyment rather than pure competition. Berg emphasizes fundamentals, encouraging players to ask questions and experiment on the mound. "It’s about having fun while learning the craft," he says, a philosophy that has already resonated with his first recruit.
Weston Truvillien, a current member of the team, praises Berg’s approach: "Coach Berg makes every practice feel like a learning adventure. He teaches us the why behind each drill, and that makes the game more exciting." The mentorship model is drawing attention from local parents who see the program as a valuable bridge between high‑level baseball and grassroots participation.
