On a Friday night in Harlem, former Fairleigh Dickinson University basketball standout Kinu Rochford was gunned down, a tragedy that has left the city’s sports and community circles reeling. The shooting occurred during a tournament, though Rochford was not actively playing at the moment, and two other individuals were also injured before the perpetrator fled.
A Life of Promise and Service
Rochford’s basketball journey began at FDU, where he emerged as the team’s leading scorer in the 2012‑13 season and earned the George Braun Leadership Award. After graduating with a degree in sports administration, he took his talent overseas, competing professionally in the Netherlands, France, England, Switzerland, Iceland, and Lithuania, even capturing a championship with Sūduva‑Mantinga in Lithuania.
Beyond the hardwood, Rochford devoted himself to helping New York’s most vulnerable. He worked for Win, a nonprofit that provides housing and supportive services for homeless families, and was known for cheering on fellow FDU athletes at their own events. Friends and colleagues remember him as a devoted father, a beloved friend, and an avid New York Knicks fan who always lifted those around him.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as police have not released a motive. While the investigation continues, the community has rallied to honor Rochford’s memory, highlighting his impact both as a player and as a compassionate leader. His legacy endures in the lives he touched on the court, in the neighborhoods he helped rebuild, and in the hearts of those who knew him.
