Former Florida State Players Reunite to Honor Legacy and Seek Lost Hero Lane Fenner

A weekend gathering at Wakulla Springs celebrates the Bill Peterson era while searching for the man behind a famous 1966 play

A gathering of former Florida State football players who starred under coach Bill Peterson is set to take place at The Lodge at Wakulla Springs from June 19 through 21, bringing together more than 80 former teammates, spouses and friends in a weekend of remembrance and celebration.

Reunion at Wakulla Springs

The event honors those who have passed since their playing days, showcases the modern era of Seminole football with tours of the renovated Doak Campbell Stadium and the program’s new operations facility, and features guest speakers Gene Deckerhoff and Charlie Barnes. A dedicated three‑hour session will revisit the personalities and stories that defined the Peterson years.

At the heart of the reunion is a search for Lane Fenner, the player forever tied to a controversial 1966 clash with Florida. Though his college statistics totaled 40 receptions for 442 yards and one touchdown, his legacy was amplified by a brief NFL stint with the San Diego Chargers after being drafted in the seventh round.

Chasing a Legendary Play

Organizers hope the gathering will finally locate Fenner, whose iconic play remains a touchstone in FSU lore. Expected attendees include Ron Sellers, former star receiver, and Joe Gibbs, who will join Bill Peterson’s son, Bill, in paying tribute to a decade that lifted the program to national relevance, compiling a 62‑42‑11 record and four bowl appearances.
