Former French NHL Star Joins Lightning as Development Specialist

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare’s new role will see him mentor prospects and work alongside development chief JP Cote.

From Player to Mentor

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, a 41-year-old former NHL forward who captained France at the 2026 Winter Olympics, was announced Thursday as the Tampa Bay Lightning’s new player development specialist. The move brings a wealth of experience to a role that will see him work directly with the organization’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, and with the broader development staff.

Having logged 700 NHL games across a decade of play, Bellemare stands as the most games‑played French‑trained player in league history and ranks second among French players in total points with 138. His career includes two Stanley Cup Final appearances — once with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2018 and again with the Lightning in 2022 — and a stint that took him from the Colorado Avalanche to the Seattle Kraken.

After concluding his playing career following a short spell with HC Ajoie in the Swiss National League, Bellemare is eager to give back to the game. He credited his late mother, Frederique Bellemare, for instilling the values that have defined his professional journey and now guide his approach to mentorship.

In his new position he will collaborate closely with JP Cote, the Lightning’s development chief, to shape forward prospects and to integrate fresh ideas into the Crunch’s system. The partnership reflects a continuity that the organization believes will help sustain its competitive edge.

Bellemare said he is looking forward to rejoining the Lightning family, where he previously recorded 33 points in 153 games from 2021 to 2023, and to contributing to a culture he describes as ‘first‑class.’
