Former G League Guard Jared Newson Joins Notre Dame Women’s Basketball Staff

Newson will replace Michaela Mabrey as assistant coach and head of player development, aligning with Niele Ivey's vision for growth and pro preparation

The University of Notre Dame has announced the addition of Jared Newson to its women's basketball coaching staff, appointing him as an assistant coach and head of player development. He will succeed Michaela Mabrey on Niele Ivey’s roster, bringing a focus on scouting and athlete growth.

A Background in the Game

Newson hails from Belleville, Illinois, where he honed his game at UT Martin from 2003 to 2006. The former standout finished his collegiate career as the program’s third‑all‑time leading scorer with 1,347 points, a mark that earned him a place in the university’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. He averaged 16.2 points per game over 83 appearances and capped his senior season with a career‑high 18.8 points per contest, garnering All‑Ohio Valley Conference honors twice.

After college, Newson briefly signed with the Dallas Mavericks before embarking on a professional journey that took him across the NBA G League with the Sioux Falls Skyforce and Bakersfield Jam, as well as stints overseas in several leagues. He later transitioned into coaching, serving as director of basketball for Phantom BC in the Unrivaled Basketball League and accumulating experience that includes work with CP3 Camps and collaborations with WNBA players, even reaching a championship game.

Fit with the Fighting Irish

Ivey and her staff have long emphasized player growth and preparation for the professional ranks, a philosophy that aligns tightly with Newson’s expertise in development and scouting. The move is seen as a strategic step to reinforce a system that helped the team finish the previous season with a 25‑11 record and a 12‑6 mark in ACC play, underscoring the program’s upward trajectory.

As Newson steps into his new role, the Fighting Irish hope his blend of playing experience, developmental insight, and scouting acumen will translate into continued success on the court.
