A Quiet Scandal in Evansville
A former board member of Golfmoor Baseball, a youth sports nonprofit in Evansville, has been placed on probation after pleading guilty to embezzlement that spanned several months.
Sean Hopple, 45, received a six‑month probationary sentence and was ordered to repay nearly $14,000 in restitution, according to court records released this week.
Prosecutors initially charged Hopple with three counts of theft, but two of those counts were dismissed as part of a plea agreement that spared him a trial and reduced the potential penalties.
Investigators say the stolen funds were taken over time, amounting to at least $18,000 that was earmarked for equipment, field maintenance and program supplies for the children served by the organization.
Hopple’s probation includes strict conditions; any violation could trigger a felony charge for the remaining count, potentially resulting in a prison sentence.
The case emerged after an internal audit flagged irregularities in the nonprofit’s finances, prompting a police investigation that culminated in Hopple’s arrest earlier in 2024.
Golfmoor Baseball, which provides athletic opportunities for low‑income families, issued a statement saying the incident has shaken community trust but that it will continue its mission with tighter financial oversight and independent audits.
