A Legend Returns to the Gridiron
Iowa football announced this week that Tom Moore, a four‑time Super Bowl champion and former Hawkeye quarterback, will serve as senior consultant to the head coach and offensive advisor. The move signals the program’s intent to blend historic expertise with contemporary strategy as the team looks ahead.
Moore’s connection to Iowa runs deep. He lettered for the Hawkeyes in 1959 and 1960, excelling both as a quarterback and a placekicker, and earned a bachelor’s degree in history during his time in Iowa City. After graduation, he began his coaching journey as a graduate assistant in 1961 and 1962, a role that laid the groundwork for a lifelong career in the sport.
His coaching path took him from the sidelines of the United States Army to assistant positions at Dayton, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, and Minnesota. Moore later transitioned to the NFL, where he contributed to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions, culminating in four championship rings — two with Pittsburgh, one with Indianapolis, and one with Tampa Bay.
What This Means for the Hawkeyes
Head coach Kirk Ferentz expressed enthusiasm about Moore’s return, highlighting the veteran’s blend of playing acumen and NFL‑level insight. Ferentz noted that Moore’s advisory role will focus on offensive philosophy, player development, and the continuity of the program’s traditions while embracing modern innovations.
The appointment underscores a broader strategy to leverage Iowa’s rich football heritage as a competitive advantage. By integrating a figure who has experienced success at both the collegiate and professional levels, the Hawkeyes aim to reinforce recruiting narratives and provide mentorship to younger assistants and players alike.
