A Camp Built on Legacy
On a bright Monday morning in Paducah, Kentucky, nearly one hundred young girls gathered on the hardwood to sharpen their skills under the guidance of three former high school teammates. The camp, which runs through Tuesday afternoon, was conceived as a celebration of the bonds forged on the court during their high school years at the Lady Mustangs.
Claire Johnson, Destiny Thomas, and Mikee Buchanan, who once led their team to the KHSAA State Championship game, returned to their hometown to host the event. Each of them expressed how the experience of mentoring these campers felt like a full‑circle moment, recalling the days when they too were the eager newcomers looking up to senior players.
Excitement and Commitment
Johnson highlighted the sheer number of participants, noting that the energy in the gym was infectious. "Seeing so many girls eager to learn and play is exactly why we wanted to give back," she said. Thomas, who affectionately referred to the campers as her "little sisters," emphasized her personal commitment to nurture each participant’s growth, both on and off the court.
Buchanan added that the camp’s attendees hailed from diverse neighborhoods, making the event a microcosm of the broader basketball community. "It’s a special feeling to be in their shoes now," she remarked, underscoring the humility and gratitude that accompanied their role as mentors.
Future Ambitions
While the camp served as a platform for youth development, the organizers also looked ahead to their own competitive futures. Johnson and Thomas, now teammates at Murray State, are focused on securing a third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Meanwhile, Buchanan is slated to lead Bethel’s team through the NAIA postseason, carrying the same spirit of mentorship into the next chapter of her career.
The organizers expressed confidence that the camp would leave a lasting imprint on the participants, many of whom are poised to follow similar pathways in college and beyond. Their combined experience, coupled with a genuine passion for the sport, promises to continue shaping the basketball landscape in the region.
