Scott Coppola, a former standout baseball player for Hofstra University, died suddenly on August 3 at the age of 49. The news was confirmed by family members, who have begun arranging funeral proceedings.
During his collegiate career from 1996 to 1999, Coppola earned four letters and served as team captain in his final two seasons. He appeared in 129 games, primarily as a third baseman and pitcher, and recorded 11 wins with 130 strikeouts on the mound. At the plate he hit .254, adding six doubles, six triples, three home runs and 28 RBIs.
After completing his degree in marketing in December 2002, Coppola returned to the campus community as an events coordinator in the Sports Facilities Department for nearly two years. He then joined the Hofstra softball coaching staff in 2003 under Hall of Fame Coach Bill Edwards, contributing to the program for two seasons before moving on to other professional pursuits.

Colleagues remember him not only for his athletic achievements but also for his dedication to student‑athletes and his infectious enthusiasm. “Scott brought a rare blend of competitiveness and kindness to every role he held,” said a former teammate, recalling his impact both on the field and in the stands.
He is survived by his wife, Tara, and their two children, Kasey and Kyle. A wake will be held on Friday, August 7, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Raynor and D'Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville, New York, followed by funeral services on Saturday, August 8 at 8 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sayville.
The university has announced plans to honor Coppola’s memory with a tribute during the upcoming baseball season, underscoring the lasting imprint he left on the Hofstra athletic community.
