Former Indiana University basketball standout Todd Leary has pleaded guilty to a felony fraud charge in Hamilton County, marking the latest chapter in a legal saga that began with his arrest last fall.
The Scheme Unfolds
Prosecutors say Leary accepted a father's cash to coach his son and launch an Amateur Athletic Union team, promising to use the funds for training, facility rental and equipment. Instead, investigators allege, the money was diverted for personal use, leaving the young athlete without the promised development.
The case unraveled in October when Leary was taken into custody and charged with ten felonies, including five counts of fraud and five of theft. After months of negotiations, he entered a plea agreement that includes a suspended jail sentence, probation and full restitution to the victim.
Leary's legal troubles are not new. He served time from 2010 to 2011 for misappropriating title‑insurance escrow funds, a conviction that has now been followed by this latest fraud admission. His sentencing is set for July 15, when a judge will determine the final terms of his probation and any additional penalties.
