Sampson James, a former Indiana University football standout, spent seven months living on the streets of Austin, Texas, after his playing days ended.
The turning point came when Jasper Steinmetz, a passerby, recognized James on a city sidewalk and decided to act.
Community Rallies Around a Forgotten Athlete
Steinmetz launched a GoFundMe campaign that quickly surpassed $16,000, a sum that enabled James to secure stable housing and purchase essential items.
The response was not limited to a single benefactor; several former Indiana teammates — Mike Katic, Peyton Hendershot, Aaron Casey and CJ West — each contributed to the fundraiser, underscoring the tight‑knit bonds formed during their college careers.
James’ football journey began at Avon High School, where he earned a 4‑star rating and attracted the attention of college recruiters.
He committed to Indiana University as part of the class of 2019 and delivered a memorable performance in his freshman season, highlighted by a standout game against Purdue in 2019.
After the 2021 season, James transferred to Purdue University, and in the spring of 2023 he briefly returned to Indiana as a walk‑on, hoping to revive his collegiate career.
The funds raised have covered more than just rent; they have provided James with a foundation to rebuild his life, illustrating how a single act of recognition can spark a cascade of support.
