A former Indiana University football standout, Sampson James, was recently discovered living on the streets of Austin, Texas, after a series of personal setbacks left him without a place to call home.
Jasper Steinmetz, a recent graduate of Indiana University, learned of James's situation through a chance encounter and decided to take action, launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise the funds needed to get James back on his feet.
Within just four days the campaign amassed more than $17,000, a testament to the outpouring of support from alumni, current players and strangers alike.
A Rapid Outpouring of Support
The donations are earmarked for concrete necessities: securing an apartment, obtaining a phone, a laptop and other basic items that many take for granted.
James's athletic pedigree is impressive; he amassed over 3,400 rushing yards and 41 touchdowns in high school, earned a four‑star rating and signed with Indiana, where he hoped to translate that promise into collegiate success.
Despite the early hype, his college career fell short of expectations, and after being expelled by his brother he ended up on the streets, a fall that starkly contrasted with his former glory on the field.
Steinmetz has been posting daily videos documenting both the somber reality of James's story and the uplifting moments as the community rallies around him, and James has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the help he is receiving.
The search for an apartment culminated in a tour of a unit that includes a gym and pool, after which Steinmetz assisted James with the application process and set up a new bank account, while a donor promised an Indiana University athletic backpack.
Now, as James begins this new chapter, he is focusing on accepting the support offered to him and rebuilding a life that once seemed out of reach.
