Chyanne Butler, who once guided the JSerra High School girls basketball program, has filed an employment discrimination lawsuit that accuses the private institution of fostering a hostile environment and of violating gender‑equity standards.
The complaint surfaces as the school faces potential scrutiny from the California Interscholastic Federation’s enforcement arm, the Southern Section, which typically refers alleged violations back to member institutions for internal investigation. A jury previously deadlocked on a separate gender‑discrimination claim, leading to a retrial scheduled for August 24 in Orange County Superior Court.
Testimony uncovers recruiting irregularities
During the earlier trial, an assistant coach described how the program had covered travel and living expenses for a recruited player — a practice that directly contravenes CIF rules on amateurism. While allegations of race discrimination and a sexual‑harassment claim against the assistant coach were dismissed, the financial support details have intensified the focus on rule compliance.
JSerra has yet to issue a public response, and Butler’s legal team, led by attorney Tim Lawson, continues to prepare its case. The proceedings illuminate the often opaque process by which high school sports bodies enforce compliance and raise broader questions about accountability and oversight.
