Former JSU Basketball Player Daniel Adegboyega Charged with First-Degree Rape

Arrest follows text-message probe; university suspends athlete as legal process heads toward a grand jury

A former Jacksonville State University basketball player, Daniel Adegboyega, now faces a first-degree rape charge after police in Alabama arrested him following a welfare check that stemmed from a troubling text-message exchange.

According to court filings, officers responded to a call at the 600 block of Ivy Row NE in Jacksonville, where they found Adegboyega inside an apartment with a woman who later told investigators she had gone to his unit to watch a movie but was compelled to engage in sexual activity against her will.

Adegboyega was subsequently held at the Calhoun County Jail without bond and, during an Aniah’s Law hearing on August 4, a judge denied any request for release, citing the seriousness of the alleged offense.

Jacksonville State University acted swiftly, suspending the 21-year-old from the men’s basketball program while emphasizing that the incident did not occur on campus. The school’s athletics department released a statement confirming its cooperation with the Jacksonville Police Department as the investigation continues.

Grand Jury Review Imminent

Authorities say the case has cleared the threshold for a grand jury review, meaning formal indictment could follow. The university has pledged to keep the community informed as the legal process unfolds.
