A Night of Celebration Turns Violent
Witnesses at a Fourth of July gathering in Memphis say that Lagerald Vick, a former University of Kansas basketball standout, became embroiled in a heated argument that escalated when he produced a firearm and fired a single shot that struck a man in the lower back.
The injured party was able to identify Vick in a police lineup a few days after the incident, confirming his involvement and prompting detectives to secure an arrest warrant.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Prosecutors have charged Vick with attempted first-degree murder, and a judge has set his bail at $1.5 million, citing the seriousness of the alleged crime and the potential flight risk.
The case has drawn considerable media attention, not only because of Vick’s profile as a former Kansas player who later pursued professional careers in New Zealand and elsewhere, but also because it raises questions about violence at private celebrations.
A Brief Basketball Career
Vick’s basketball résumé includes four seasons with the Jayhawks from 2015 through 2019, followed by stints with several professional clubs, most recently the Southland Sharks in New Zealand, from which he was released in April 2024.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, and further charges or plea negotiations could follow as the legal process unfolds.
