Arrest and Immediate Charges
Former Kansas University guard Lagerald Montrell Vick was arrested early Sunday in Memphis, Tennessee, and formally charged with attempted first-degree murder and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. The allegations stem from a July 4 gathering where Vick is accused of shooting a man, an act that left the victim critically injured.
According to police reports, the victim identified Vick from a photo lineup as the shooter, strengthening the case against the former college star. Investigators have indicated that the incident was not random but arose from a dispute that escalated into violence.
Legal Status and Prior Record
Vick is currently being held at the Shelby County Jail with a bond set at $1.5 million. He remains an inmate awaiting a hearing that will determine whether he will be released pending trial. This is not his first encounter with the law; earlier this year he was arrested on separate felony counts of aggravated burglary, theft and vandalism, charges that have yet to be resolved.
The new indictment adds a layer of severity, as attempted first-degree murder carries a potential life sentence if convicted. Prosecutors have emphasized the use of a firearm as an aggravating factor, which contributed to the high bond amount.
Basketball Career and International Play
Lagerald Vick played for the Kansas Jayhawks from 2015 through 2019, contributing to the program during a period that included a Sweet Sixteen run. He took a leave of absence late in his senior season before completing his eligibility. Since leaving college, Vick has pursued professional opportunities abroad, most recently competing in leagues in Mexico and New Zealand.
His overseas stints kept him in the public eye, but the recent legal troubles have overshadowed his athletic achievements. Friends and former teammates have expressed shock, while university officials have yet to comment publicly on the matter.
