Former major league outfielder Dave Doster traveled back to his roots in Fort Wayne, Indiana, this weekend to address participants in the Wildcat Baseball League’s annual Mr. Mac Day. The gathering, held on the campus of Indiana State University, brought together dozens of young players, their families, and community members eager to hear from a player who once wore a Philadelphia Phillies uniform.
A Homecoming for a Baseball Legend
Doster, a New Haven High School graduate who was selected by the Phillies in 1993, spent two seasons in the big leagues before returning to the minor leagues. In a brief interview he stressed that the business side of professional baseball should never eclipse the simple joy of playing the sport.
The event’s namesake, Dale McMillan, founded the Wildcat Baseball program years ago, and Mr. Mac Day serves as a tribute to his vision of using the game to mentor youth. Doster’s presence added a personal touch, as he signed autographs, shared hitting tips, and even exchanged greetings with parents he had once faced on the diamond.
For many of the teenagers in attendance, the encounter was their first direct interaction with a professional athlete. Doster’s willingness to meet former opponents and former pupils of his hitting clinics underscored the tight‑knit nature of the local baseball community.
League officials said they intend to keep the tradition alive, promising another former MLB player for next year’s edition of Mr. Mac Day, ensuring that the pipeline of inspiration continues.
