Patrick Goodpaster, a former Narbonne High School football player turned head coach, celebrated his first victory as the leader of the Gauchos on Friday, guiding the team to a 28‑18 triumph over Fairfax.
A Rocky Start
The win came despite a three‑year postseason ban imposed on Narbonne’s football program in 2024 for repeated rule violations, a penalty that has kept the team out of City Section playoffs and forced a rapid turnover of players and staff. Early in the season the Gauchos suffered a 43‑0 loss to Cleveland followed by a 32‑14 defeat at North Torrance before finally breaking through.
Goodpaster inherited a program that began the season with only 16 athletes who needed to learn the basics of high‑school football, and after early setbacks he now oversees a roster of 24 varsity players. His coaching philosophy emphasizes rebuilding trust, discipline and a culture of hard work, all under the oversight of the Gardena Police Department.
Looking Ahead
The school plans to appeal the sanctions this month in hopes of lifting the ban and restoring playoff eligibility, while Goodpaster aims to expand the roster to 45 players next year and continue shaping a resilient team culture.
