A Community Tradition
Ernie Sims, a former NFL linebacker who grew up in Tallahassee’s Parks and Recreation system, returned to his hometown to lead the 19th edition of his Football and Cheer Camp.
The three‑day camp, held on Friday at a local high school field, drew dozens of children from Leon County who received hands‑on instruction in both football fundamentals and cheerleading techniques.
The event was bolstered by a collaborative effort that included the Tallahassee Police Department, the Fire Department and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, underscoring a shared commitment to youth engagement.
Sims, speaking to the assembled crowd, emphasized the importance of representing Tallahassee in a positive light and of using sport as a vehicle for community building.
Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil echoed the sentiment, noting that reaching young people early is essential for fostering trust between law enforcement and the community.
The camp’s impact will be felt beyond the field, as the city prepares to host its annual track and field meet on July 25 at Florida State University, continuing a summer of athletic celebration.
