European Leagues Embrace North American Experience
Brayden Tracey, a first‑round selection by the Anaheim Ducks, has agreed to a deal with Blue Devils Weiden, who compete in the DEL2. After three full seasons of professional play in North America, Tracey capped his AHL tenure with a 31‑point output in 55 games during the 2021‑22 campaign, a season that remains his most productive.
His path to Germany follows stints in Finland's Liiga, Slovakia's Tipsport Extraliga and Sweden's HockeyAllsvenskan, where he accumulated experience across different styles of play.
Joining him, Luke Toporowski, who spent four years as a full‑time AHL forward, has signed with the Augsburg Panthers of the DEL. Toporowski burst onto the AHL scene with 15 goals and 29 points in his rookie season, a performance that hinted at his offensive potential.
The move marks the latest chapter for a player who has been a fixture in the AHL, bringing a blend of speed and grit to the German top division.
Veteran forward Thomas Schemitsch, a third‑round pick of the Florida Panthers in 2015, has shifted within the DEL, signing for the Schwenninger Wild Wings. Over his DEL career he has posted 64 points in 104 games, while his 103 points from 318 AHL appearances underscore a consistent offensive contribution.
The transactions reflect a growing trend of North American players leveraging European leagues as a platform to extend their careers and showcase versatility, while clubs in Germany look to bolster depth with seasoned talent.
