Former Northern Illinois University baseball standouts Cole Smith and Ivan Dahlberg have taken the next step in their careers, signing professional contracts in the independent Frontier League. Smith joined the Schaumburg Boomers on July 1, while Dahlberg signed with the Joliet Slammers on July 3, each making immediate impacts in their debut appearances.
A Record‑Breaking Season
The 2026 Huskies capped a historic year with a program‑record 36 victories, captured their first Mid‑American Conference championship and earned a #3 seed in the Tallahassee Regional, marking the team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1972.
Cole Smith’s Professional Debut
Smith, who led the Huskies with a .357 batting average, a .583 slugging percentage and 19 doubles in 2025, entered his first five games with the Boomers at 6‑for‑13, including two doubles, three RBI and four walks. He was also recognized as a Second Team All‑Mid‑American Conference selection and earned Academic All‑District and All‑America honors.
Ivan Dahlberg’s New Chapter
Dahlberg, who topped the Huskies with 50 walks last season, went 1‑for‑3 with a walk and an RBI in his debut for the Slammers. He finished his collegiate career with a .220 average, nine home runs and 29 RBI, becoming only the second Huskie in program history to reach the 50‑walk milestone.
