Former New Mexico State University football players Jeff Davison and Cole Schnettgoecke were caught up in a violent episode that unfolded at a private gathering in Las Cruces early this month.
According to police reports, the two were initially asked to leave the party after witnesses described their behavior as inappropriate. Instead of complying, they allegedly regrouped with several companions and returned to the fraternity house later that night.
Inside the residence they forced their way into the building, confronting multiple fraternity members and inflicting serious physical harm. Several victims suffered broken bones and facial fractures, requiring emergency medical attention.
Legal Proceedings Underway
Authorities have filed a slew of charges against the former athletes, including battery, burglary, aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery and burglary. Davison faces a battery count, breaking and entering, aggravated burglary and conspiracy, while Schnettgoecke is accused of five counts of aggravated battery alongside similar felonies.
New Mexico State University issued a brief statement emphasizing that the safety of its student body remains its top priority, and it is cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation proceeds.
Prosecutors say the case will likely move forward in the coming weeks, with a preliminary hearing scheduled to determine the next steps. The incident has reignited conversations about campus safety, fraternity conduct and the responsibilities of former student‑athletes.
