Former Patriots player brings youth football camp to Newberry

Corey Durden’s second annual camp draws families and local coaches

Corey Durden, a Newberry High School graduate and Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, returned to his hometown to lead the second annual Corey Durden Youth Football Camp.

The event took place on Saturday, June 13, at the Easton Newberry Sports Complex, where Durden split participants into two age‑specific sessions, one for children six to nine and another for those ten to thirteen.

Community support on the sidelines

Families gathered to watch the drills, including Pedro Vidal, who attended with two of his sons, and Lotoya Williams‑Brown, a former standout basketball player, who brought her sons who compete in Pop Warner football.

Both parents highlighted the importance of investing in local initiatives and encouraging youngsters to chase their athletic and personal aspirations.

Durden, who spent four years in the NFL after stints with the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Giants, was joined by several community youth football coaches who helped run the activities.

The camp not only focused on skill development but also on character building, reinforcing the idea that dedication and community involvement can open doors to future opportunities.

A legacy of giving back

Mayor and city officials praised the partnership with the City of Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department, which helped secure the venue and resources for the event.

Durden’s initiative reflects a growing trend of professional athletes using their platform to mentor the next generation, especially in underserved areas of Alachua County.
