Former professional basketball player Maika Usita has returned to his home island of Maui to take on a new role as head coach of the boys basketball team at Haleakala Waldorf School, ending a decade spent competing overseas.
Usita’s journey took him from the courts of Hawaii to leagues in Europe and Asia, where he absorbed a variety of coaching styles and competitive environments. Now back on Maui, he hopes to translate those lessons into a program that prioritizes more than just scores.
