A Summer of Transition
The Buffalo Sabres' developmental pipeline saw a wave of departures this summer as a handful of promising prospects sought fresh challenges beyond the NHL.
Nikita Novikov, a sixth‑round selection in 2021, finished his North American adjustment with the Rochester Americans, where he posted plus‑minus ratings of +20 and +28 in consecutive seasons. After the Sabres waived him in March, he signed with Dynamo Moscow, joining the KHL's most storied club.
New Horizons Across the Globe
Nicolas Aube‑Kubel, who appeared in 19 games for Buffalo during the 2024‑25 campaign, inked a deal with Dynamo Minsk, another KHL franchise, while Isaac Belliveau secured a one‑year AHL contract with the Abbotsford Canucks, the top affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks.
Jagger Joshua, a mainstay for the Amerks last season, agreed to a two‑year, two‑way contract with the Minnesota Wild's AHL affiliate, while Jake Leschyshyn headed to Finland's Liiga with HFIK. Ethan Miedema, a 2023 fourth‑round pick, committed to NCAA hockey at Bemidji State University, and Brett Murray, who logged 26 games for the Sabres, signed with the Shanghai Dragons of the KHL, having previously stinted with Nurnberg Ice Tigers in Germany.
Goalie Michael Houser, who appeared in six NHL games for Buffalo, announced his retirement and transitioned into a goaltender development director role with the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL, aiming to shape the next generation of net‑minders.
The Sabres' decision not to extend qualifying offers to several of these players opened the door for them to explore markets in Russia, Finland, the United States and beyond, underscoring the increasingly global nature of player development.
