Thomas Walkup, the former standout guard for the Stephen F. Austin University Lumberjacks, has agreed to a three‑year, $9.6 million contract with Dubai Basketball, marking a new chapter in his professional career.
Contract Details
The agreement includes a $2.6 million buyout of the remaining obligation Walkup had with Olympiacos, the Greek powerhouse where he spent five seasons, and guarantees a substantial financial package for the guard as he embarks on a new venture in the Gulf region.
During his tenure with Olympiacos, Walkup helped the club capture 12 domestic and continental titles and reach five Final Fours, culminating in a EuroLeague championship that highlighted his contributions on the European stage.
SFA Legacy
Back in the United States, Walkup’s college career was marked by two Southland Conference Player of the Year awards, a tournament MVP title and multiple All‑Southland first‑team selections, underscoring his impact at the NCAA level.
In 2016, he led the 14‑seed Lumberjacks to a memorable victory over third‑seed West Virginia, scoring 33 points, and the team nearly advanced past Notre Dame before falling 76‑75 on a buzzer‑beater.
The move to Dubai Basketball not only secures a substantial financial package for Walkup but also signals the growing interest of Gulf region clubs in attracting seasoned talent from Europe and the NCAA.
