A 53‑year‑old soccer coach who led girls' teams in the Coachella Valley found himself at the center of a criminal case that unfolded over several months in 2021 and early 2022.
Online grooming and the exchange of illicit favors
Prosecutors say the coach initiated contact with a 13‑year‑old girl through social media platforms, promising gift cards and cash in return for nude photographs. The arrangement lasted through the summer of 2021, during which the girl was coerced into sending explicit images.
An in‑person encounter that crossed a legal line
The relationship escalated to a face‑to‑face meeting in a church parking lot in Desert Hot Springs, where the coach kissed the girl and pressed her hand against his groin. Investigators later determined that this contact constituted a lewd act.
In February 2022, the coach tracked the girl down at a mall in Temecula and presented her with a $200 gift card, a transaction that was later uncovered by detectives.
During the investigation, the girl deleted numerous messages to conceal the interaction, but digital evidence was sufficient for law enforcement to move forward with an arrest on September 22, 2022.
Legal outcomes and community response
The Riverside County Superior Court ultimately sentenced the coach to two years of mandatory supervision after he pleaded guilty to the two felony counts. Notably, the court recorded that the defendant had no prior felony convictions, a factor that influenced the sentencing decision.
Local officials and community members have expressed outrage and concern, emphasizing the need for vigilance when coaches and youth organizations interact with minors online.
