A community comes together
Roanoke, Va. — The inaugural George C. Miller Youth Football Camp unfolded this weekend, bringing together young athletes and community members to celebrate the memory of the late coaching legend George “Killa” Miller. The event was held on the fields of William Fleming High School, a fitting tribute to a man who once led the Colonels to a state championship appearance.
The camp featured a series of drills, a tug‑of‑war showdown and classic two‑hand touch games, each designed to echo the spirit of Miller’s rigorous yet encouraging coaching style. Participants moved through stations that emphasized fundamentals, teamwork and the kind of discipline that defined Miller’s programs.
Zack Leonard, the current head coach of the Colonels, took the opportunity to speak about Miller’s lasting impact, noting that the coach’s dedication to his students extended far beyond the playbook. "George Miller taught us that consistency and hard work are non‑negotiable," Leonard said, recalling the mentor’s insistence on daily improvement.
A tribute on the field
Former standout Malachi Coleman, now a recent graduate of Syracuse University, returned to receive a plaque and a commemorative football in recognition of his career at William Fleming, where he amassed more than 5,000 rushing yards and 62 touchdowns. The ceremony highlighted Coleman’s achievements and his role as a model for younger players.
Coleman reflected on his high school years, describing how the discipline instilled by Miller shaped him into both a player and a role model. "The lessons I learned on this field still guide me today," he said, urging the next generation to pursue consistency and hard work as they chase their own goals.
The camp not only highlighted the achievements of a remarkable coach but also reinforced a sense of continuity, as alumni, current players and local supporters gathered to honor a legacy that still resonates on the field.
