A sudden leadership change has unfolded at Berean Christian High School in Walnut Creek, California, just days before the football team was set to begin preseason practice.
Matt Lisle, a Berean Christian alumnus who had been hired as head coach in December, announced that he would leave the position to accept a coaching role at Southern Utah University, where he will lead the Thunderbirds softball program.
A Coach’s Unexpected Pivot
The school’s athletic director, La Shawn Wells, who had no prior coaching experience, stepped in as interim head coach five days before practice was scheduled to start, citing a sense of divine guidance for the decision.
Wells’s sudden elevation reflects a broader trend of faith‑driven choices in high school sports, and his lack of coaching background has not dampened the expectations placed on him by the administration.
The Eagles finished the 2025 season with a 4‑6 record, marked by three consecutive losses and a total score differential of 139‑21, setting a challenging backdrop for the new coaching arrangement.
Lisle’s extensive background in baseball and softball, spanning 23 years and including stints at Fresno State, the University of South Carolina and the Chicago White Sox, made his move to a Division I softball head‑coaching post a natural next step.
His departure was confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, after Southern Utah University announced him as the head coach of the Thunderbirds softball program, underscoring the interconnected nature of modern collegiate athletics.
The team’s season opener is slated for August 29 against Kennedy High School in Fremont, California, a game that will mark the first test of Wells’s interim leadership and the start of a new chapter for the program.
