A career cut short
Jeff Gladney emerged as a standout cornerback for the TCU Horned Frogs, anchoring a defense that helped the program climb into the national conversation between 2016 and 2019. In 49 appearances he logged 146 tackles and 43 pass breakups, numbers that earned him All‑Big 12 honors and a second‑team All‑American nod in 2019.
The following year the Minnesota Vikings selected him with the 31st overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. In his rookie campaign he started 15 games, tallying 81 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three pass breakups and an interception, quickly establishing himself as a reliable presence in the secondary.
Off the field, Gladney’s trajectory darkened after a domestic‑violence allegation surfaced in 2021. Though he was released by the Vikings and later acquitted in 2022, the episode cast a long shadow over his professional prospects and personal reputation.
After clearing his name, Gladney signed with the Arizona Cardinals, hoping to revive his career. Just weeks later, he was involved in a fatal automobile collision in Dallas that also claimed the life of his girlfriend, Mercedes Palacios. The crash cut short a promising NFL future and left a community mourning the loss of a talented athlete.
Tributes from teammates, coaches and fans highlighted not only his on‑field contributions but also his character off it. While his story ended abruptly, the impact he made at TCU, in the NFL and among those who knew him will endure.
