Christian Wolanin, a 27‑year‑old defenseman who helped the University of North Dakota capture its eighth NCAA championship as a freshman, has agreed to a one‑year contract with the Colorado Avalanche. The move marks the latest chapter in a career that has taken him from the Fighting Hawks to the NHL ranks.
Wolanin’s professional journey includes stints with the Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks, where he accumulated 86 NHL appearances, six goals and 23 points. His college tenure was highlighted by a senior season in which he became the first UND defenseman to lead the team in scoring since James Patrick in 1983.
Contract Details and Incentives
The deal stipulates an NHL salary of $850,000 should he earn a spot on the Avalanche roster, while a $400,000 salary is guaranteed if he instead plays for the Colorado Eagles, the team’s American Hockey League affiliate. The contract also contains performance‑based incentives that could increase the total value.
Wolanin will reunite with Dave Hakstol, his former coach at UND, who now serves as an assistant coach with the Avalanche.
